Solidbody Restoration
This 1958 Stratocaster came in from a Chicago recording studio in 2013. The studio had just bought it, and it needed serious work before it could be put to use. The owner's directive was clear: it had to feel like itself. No shortcuts, nothing that would compromise what it was.
The challenge was the fretwork. The instrument was entirely original, finish and fretboard and everything, and every pass with a file had to account for that. Protecting a 55-year-old nitrocellulose finish while leveling frets is the kind of work that can't be rushed. The bridge had rusted through and was cleaned piece by piece by hand. A bone nut was fitted to spec.
When it was done, it was exactly what a 1958 Stratocaster should be: warm, glassy, and immediate. Pre-CBS in every way that matters. The studio got what they came for.
Customization
It's all about the frets, and anyone serious about playing will tell you the same. There are standards and best practices to maintain, but fretwork is never a one-size-fits-all scenario.

Custom Builds
Sometimes a client wants something unique but familiar, and a custom piece is the answer. Exclusive finish techniques, immaculate fretwork, and extreme selectivity of woods and components.
A one-off commission. A client brought in his own hippo tooth blank and asked to have it cut and fitted to his instrument. Working a customer's material to final shape demands extra care: there is no second blank if something goes wrong.
